Week 2 of our Footloose KAL

This week in our Knit Along we are working the heel and turning the heel.  This is the step that intimidates a lot of knitters but we feel that knowing what shapes your making and knowing exactly what part of the sock you are knitting.(week 1 recap) So far we have worked the cuff and the leg of our sock.  You can find the week 1 post here.https://gem-3910432.net

Next, we are going to work the heel flap (to work heel) and then the heel turn.  To do this we are going to be arranging our needles so we can go from working on the round to working in rows.

To Work Heel:

K 14(15, 16) sts from first needle onto 4th needle -28(30, 32) heel sts.

Leave rem sts on 2nd and 3rd needles unworked for Instep.

Working back and forth in rows (on needle 4), work heel as follows:

Next Row: (wrong side) K1, p 13(14, 15), inc one st in next st, p 12(13, 14), k1 - 29(31, 33) heel sts.Row 1: (right side) *K1, sl 1, being very careful not to tighten the yarn behind the slipped st (this prevents a ridge); rep from * to last st, k1.

Row 2: K1, p to last st, k1.Repeat these last 2 rows 9(10, 11) times more - 20(22, 24) rows in all, then rep Row 1 once.

To Turn Heel:

When you turn the heel you are making a triangle shape with your stitches and only working on one side of your needle.  You are still working with your 4th needle but now instead of working straight down the leg, you are going to start working towards where your toes are.  After this step, you will begin to shape the instep of the foot of the sock.

Next Row: K1, p 14(15, 16), p2tog, p1, turn.Next Row: K3, sl 1, k1, psso, k1, turn. Next Row: P4, p2tog, p1, turn.Next Row: K5, sl 1, k1, psso, k1, turn. Next Row: P6, p2tog, p1, turn.Next Row: K7, sl 1, k1, psso, k1, turn. Next Row: P8, p2tog, p1, turn.Next Row: K9, sl 1, k1, psso, k1, turn. Next Row: P 10, p2tog, p1, turn.Next Row: K 11, sl 1, k1, psso, k1, turn. Next Row: P 12, p2tog, p1, turn.Next Row: K 13, sl 1, k1, psso, k1, turn.

Next Row: First needle, pick up andk 14(15, 16) sts along left side of heel rows;2nd and 3rd needles, k 14(15, 16) sts from each needle for instep;

4th needle, pick up and k 14(15, 16)sts along right side of heel rows, then k7(8, 8) sts from first needle, inc one st in last st.There are now 22(24, 25) sts on first needle; 14(15, 16) sts on 2nd and 3rd needles; 22(24, 25) sts on 4th needle; place a marker and join - 72(78, 82) sts, thus having the beg of rnd at center of heel.

This part of our sock looks more complicated than it actually is. Here is another link to our Footloose pattern and a stitch guide Next week we will be working picking up the stitches that we are
